Description
Oxjam is the name for the nationwide music festival in aid of the charity Oxfam. It's been running since 2006 and involves musicians and singers the length and breadth of the country (www.oxfam.org.uk/oxjam).
Leighton Buzzard has been hosting its own Oxjam festival every year since 2009 – although the very first Oxjam event, a ceilidh featuring the band Stomp, took place two years before, in October 2007 at the Raven Theatre, Cedars Upper School. About 200 people enjoyed the dancing, plus music provided by four local bands that night, and over £850 was raised from the evening.
Oxjam Leighton Buzzard has been steadily growing ever since, and this March (2013) sees the fifth annual festival staged, with more than 30 different musical events scheduled throughout the month. Organisers hope it will be at least as successful as last year’s festival, when £5,168 was raised for Oxfam, with the overall total made since 2007 reaching £19,400.
Many of the acts on the running list have featured in previous years, among them popular local bands and artists, as well as nationally and internationally renowned musicians. With a wide range of different events, and numerous styles of music and song on offer, there’s something to suit every musical taste – from pub gigs to choral recitals to brass band concerts.
Full details of the month’s schedule can be found at Oxjam LB’s website: http://www.oxjamleightonbuzzard.org.uk/. You can also find news and photos, or get in touch if you want, on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/oxjamlieghtonbuzzard.
